The attack on the Indian embassy in Afghanistan is a setback for a country which has been one of Afghanistan’s closest allies. After the fall of Taliban, India had moved back to the war-torn country toregain its strategic position. It backed Hamid Karzai, who went to an Indian university in his younger days, keeping in mind the required political friendship with Afghanistan. India became one of the leading donors back in 2001.($750 million for infrastructure). Funds, over the years, have been commited to the cause of education, health, power etc. India is erecting transmission lines in northern Afghan, digging tubewells in six provinces and even working for the infrastructure, sanitation mechanism and lighting up of atleast 200 villages through solar power.
OBVIOUSLY, INTERESTS IN AFGHAN WHO DO NOT WANT THE COUNTRY TO PROSPER, WANT INDIA OUT OF AFGHANISTAN.
So, why has India stuck in this war-torn country, which is still the primary breeding grounds for many a terrorist camps?
The answer is simple:
Strategically, India can always fall back on Afghanistan to pressurise Pakistan on its North-western border, in case Pakistan, whose beuracracy is always in a hate-India mode, tries extreme militancy, terror proliferation or even a war.
India already has a (somewhat) dependably ally in the form of Bangladesh, but unfortunately the world’s largest growing economy are surrounded by suspicious neighbours.
CHINA - Communal threat, always.
SRILANKA - still coming to terms with democracy.
NEPAL,BURMA, AFGHANISTAN - Nascent democracies.
PAKISTAN - Do they know what a democratic nation is?
In such a scenario, India cosing up to Afghanistan, surely isn’t surprising.
For now, India will have to reconsider and beef-up its security in order to continue the developing relationship between the two countries.
